If you are a driven student, or the parent of one, you have probably noticed that "do research" is now standard advice for standing out in competitive admissions. That advice is broadly right. The problem is that a whole industry has grown up around it, and the programs inside that industry are not equally valuable. This guide explains what research programs actually are, the two very different models they follow, what admissions officers can and cannot verify, and how to choose.
Why research matters for admissions
Grades and test scores tell an admissions officer that you can perform inside a classroom. They do not tell them whether you can do anything with that ability on your own. Research is one of the few activities that demonstrates the second thing: that you can take an open-ended problem, work on it over months, and produce something real. It signals initiative, persistence, and the capacity for university-level work. That is why it carries weight.
It is worth being precise, though, about what does the signalling. It is not the word "research" on your application. It is evidence that you did genuine work. The strongest version of that evidence is something a stranger can check.
The two models of research programs
Almost every research program for high school students falls into one of two camps, and it is the single most useful distinction to understand before you spend money.
Model one: publish a paper
The most common model pairs you with a mentor, usually a PhD student, to produce a research paper over roughly eight to twelve weeks, and then submit it to a journal or conference. Much of this work is computational: analysing a public dataset, building a model, writing it up. Done well, it teaches real skills. The output is a publication you can point to.
The honest caveat is that the prestige of a publication varies enormously. A paper at a major, selective venue is a real achievement. A paper at a minor pay-to-present conference is not the same thing, and admissions officers increasingly know the difference. If you choose this model, the venue matters as much as the paper.
Model two: do real work
The second model is less common and, we would argue, harder to fake. Instead of writing a paper about a problem, you go and work on the problem in the real world: you gather your own primary data, design an intervention, build something, deploy it, and measure what actually changed. The output is not a manuscript but a documented, verifiable record of real impact.
This is the model FIELDWORK is built on. We think it is stronger for a simple reason: a deployed project with measured results is difficult to manufacture and easy to believe. It shows doing, not just writing.
The question to ask of any research program is not "will I get an output?" but "will the output be something a university can trust?"
What admissions officers can actually verify
Put yourself in an admissions officer's chair. They read thousands of applications, many claiming impressive-sounding projects. What they trust is what they can check. A link to a published paper on a recognised database is checkable. A public, permanent record of a real project, with data and results anyone can inspect, is checkable. A vague claim of "research on climate change" is not, and they discount it accordingly.
This is the core idea behind everything we do: verifiability is what turns a claim into a credential. It is also, bluntly, what protects you from being lumped in with students who overstated.
Whatever program you choose, choose one where the output is independently verifiable. A checkable public record of real work is worth more than an impressive description no one can confirm, and it is the single biggest thing that separates strong research credentials from filler.
What to look for when choosing a program
A short, honest checklist:
- Verifiability. Can a stranger check that the work is real, without taking your word for it? If not, be cautious.
- Ownership. Is this your project, or are you a name attached to a mentor's template? The best work is genuinely yours.
- A real output. Real data, a real intervention, a real result, not just a document that restates public information.
- Honest claims. Be wary of any program that guarantees admission to a specific university. No one can, and the promise is a red flag.
- Fit with your curriculum. If you are in the IB, a program that maps to CAS, the Extended Essay, or the CP reflective project lets the same work count twice.
